Camelot wheel & harmonic mixing

Every key with its Camelot code, and which keys mix well together.

The Camelot wheel arranges the 24 major and minor keys like a clock. Minor keys get the letter A, major keys get B, and each number from 1 to 12 pairs a minor key with its relative major.

To mix harmonically, move to a key with the same number (switching A↔B changes the mood between minor and major), or one number up or down. Moving +1 lifts the energy; +2 is a bolder "energy boost" jump.

MP3, WAV, FLAC, M4A or video, up to 15 minutes.

  2. 2We analyse it

The audio’s harmony and rhythm are measured note by note.

How key detection works

Every key uses some notes more than others. SongKeyFinder separates the harmonic part of the track from the drums, measures how much energy each of the 12 notes has across the song, and compares that profile with the known profiles of all 24 major and minor keys.

The best match is your key. We also show the runner-up, because songs often sit between a key and its relative major or minor.

For DJs, producers and singers

DJs use the Camelot code for harmonic mixing: tracks with the same number, or one step apart, blend without clashing. Producers check the key before sampling or writing a bassline. Singers use it to find out whether a song sits in their range and how far to transpose it.

The BPM is detected from the drums and kept between 70 and 180, which is where most music lives. If a track feels twice as fast or slow, double or halve it.

Frequently asked questions

Is it free?

Yes, free with no account. The site is supported by ads.

How accurate is it?

Key detection is right for most pop, rock, electronic and hip-hop tracks. Songs that change key, use modes, or are mostly percussion are harder; check the alternative key too.

What is the Camelot code?

A DJ-friendly way of writing keys as a number from 1 to 12 plus A (minor) or B (major). Keys next to each other on the wheel mix harmonically.

Why is the BPM half or double what I expected?

Tempo is ambiguous: a track at 140 BPM can feel like 70. We keep results between 70 and 180 BPM; adjust if your genre lives outside that range.

What files work?

Any common audio or video format up to 100 MB and 15 minutes.

Do you keep my tracks?

No. Files are deleted automatically after 24 hours.
